Fireworks

hanabiThe other day, I bought fireworks for this summer at the supermarket. Was it too early? I like fireworks very much, because they are very beautiful and enjoyable. In summer we often have fireworks displayed in many places. I sometimes watch them in the garden of my house, which tells me that summer has truly come. I like both watching and using them.

Especially, I love the sparkling fireworks which are very small and look like they are trying to sparkle hard by themselves. Last summer I played with these sparkling sticks with my friends and we competed with each other to see who could make them sparkle the longest. Since those things are very thin and light, they are easily put out by the wind, which makes this game very exciting.

In my hometown, we have a peculiar performance called tezutu-fireworks, which is made and displayed by men. They make it every year by stuffing some gunpowder in a bamboo tube, plugging it with newspapers, and then displaying it in their hands in front of everyone. It is a very dangerous display but an essential traditional event in my town. My father likes to participate because it makes him feel brave and daring.

Anyway, fireworks are normally displayed in the night sky in summer. Is it because it is too cold to see firework outdoors in winter?

My husband is crazy about fireworks. The only place where you can get them (legally) in Australia is the the capital city, Canberra. He often has to go there for his job and one of the presents he will bring back for us is a big bag of fireworks. We used to get assorted ones, but now we select them by name, mostly the rocket ones that shoot up in the sky and fall in a big beautifully coloured canopy. We ring our friends and head for a spot by the beach where he backs the car which he will use to pump up the mix cd specially made for the fireworks, kind of like our own fireworks suite. One of our friends is a fireman, so we figure its good to play with dangerous explosives in the presence of a emergency professional. Finally we let off the loud ones, we call them bungers. I wish we could buy fireworks at the supermarket like you can.

Fireworks! That sounds nice. Last summer, we played fireworks with English course members in the camp, didn't we? I enjoyed myself very much at that time, because, as I grow up, I hardly use fireworks in the summertime any more.

I love fireworks too, Masami-san! Every summer, many fireworks displays are held. I especially like to watch the fireworks display in Miya River, in Ise. It is a big summer event and the fireworks launched into the sky are very beautiful! When I was a very little girl, the fireworks could be seen from the window of the second floor of my house. But now they can't, because a lot of buildings and the lights prevent us from seeing them. That makes me rather sad. But, anyway, I would like to go to see the fireworks display this summer!

The firework display at the Miya River in Ise is great! I can watch it at my house but I usually go to the bank. Last year I invited some of my classmates to the firework display in Ise and we enjoyed it. There were many people and most of the girls including me wore yukata, a kind of kimono. Though it is a little bit more difficult to move wearing yukata than wearing ordinary clothes, I like it very much.

This year, we hold the firework display at the Miya River on July 19 (unless the information I got is wrong). Why don't you come and enjoy the beauty of the fireworks?

Mike went shopping for fireworks a few days ago.

Thank you for your comments, everyone.

Voz, it sounds nice to display fireworks with your friends by the beach, and you are lucky to have a fireman as a friend, aren't you? I don't have many chances to play fireworks by ourselves although we often watch them displayed by firemen in summer. So I think you are happy to have a husband who loves fireworks!

Hiroko-san, I also enjoyed playing with the sparklers in camp last summer. I wish to play with them in summer camp this year too.

Yukiko-san and Tomoko-san, I watch fireworks display in Miya-river every year too. I have been to the river side to watch them twice, but in almost all year, I look from my house. Thank you for your information about the date of fireworks display this year, Yukiko-san. I'm looking forward to the display in this year too.

Have you ever watched or heard Kingyo fireworks? Kingyo is a goldfish in English, and they sparkles above water like goldfish swim. These fireworks which are displayed in the river near my grandmother's house in Ise are beautiful and cute!
