Architect passes the blame

I often watch the news about the scandal over falsified strength reports for dozens of buildings. Hidetsugu Aneha, the architect who faked the reports, finally appeared in court on Wednesday:

Aneha admitted he falsified reports for about 60 buildings, starting in 1998 for a condominium complex built by Kimura Construction in Tokyo’s Ota Ward. Many of those buildings have been found to be structurally unsafe, prompting hotels to suspend operations and local governments to ask residents to relocate.

Aneha apologized for all the trouble he has caused.

However, he claims it wasn’t his fault:

But he said he revised the quake-resistance reports because of extreme pressure from Shinozuka to reduce construction materials for buildings.

Aneha quoted Shinozuka as saying in 1998, “We won’t give you any work if you don’t reduce the volume of reinforcing steel to be used.’’

At that time, Aneha said about 90 percent of his work came from Kimura Construction. “If I refused, my income would have fallen close to zero. So I did it even though I knew it was wrong,’’ Aneha said.

Frankly, I don’t understand what Aneha’s was thinking. And I don’t know what he wanted to do. Needless to say, architects must build secure buildings. But Aneha didn’t.

Suppose I was in a victim’s place, what would I do? Maybe I’d think I can’t live quietly. I’d feel fear every day. I’d have a grudge against Aneha.

In fact, this event happened, which can’t be helped. But I think it needs to be solved as well as possible.
