Doubts about video games

I like video games very much. When I was a high school student, my parents allowed me to play only an hour a week, but I live alone now, so I can play video games for as long as I want to. Yet I have my doubts about the habit.

One of the biggest problems is to waste time. If I manage to kill the villain on the final level of a game, there is no benefit in the real world. Spending so much time on video games isn’t good for my life, but it is very difficult for me to play a video game only for a short time; I can’t stop playing it. I think of video games as a kind of drug.

Video games are also bad for my eyes. As soon as I start playing one, my eyes hurt. But in spite of the pain I continue to play. If I play with my personal computer, my eyes become worse than with the television set because the screen is close to my eyes.

The price of video game software bothers me too. One game costs about six thousand yen, which I find very expensive. When I don’t have money, I cannot buy software. I have to bear this situation because if I buy some game software, my life becomes harder.

Video games are my hobby. I think I’d be sad if they’d disappear suddenly. But I have to stop playing them every day because I am a student, so I have to study hard. Maybe I should look for another hobby …

The addictive part never seemed to work on me. I was a kid when the first video games came out with their blocky, pixellated graphics — that was even before Space Invaders and PacMan came out. I played some of them back at the time but never came to take any real interest in them. A while ago one of my little nieces taught me how to play Super Mario, but she quickly wanted it back, so I never managed to get into that either.

So, Yuki-kun, what games do you play?

I’m a student right now, I only just left High school behind two years ago and video games (mostly) with it.

I was never addicted per se, but I had a real passion for many of them. I remember being a big fan of the old Final Fantasy games. Well, nowadays times change and I don’t feel the tug as strongly any more — actually the only video game I still want is the race driving simulation Gran Turismo 4. Have you heard of that one Yuki?

I guess over time school and other things started to take more priority over my life and so I lost the habit unintentionally. Aww well, I have a lot more time nowadays :D

I didn’t know the games which came out before Space Invaders. I want to play them. I played Super Mario Bros yesterday. It’s interesting for me because it’s in the arcade game. I think old games like Super Mario become fashionable again. New games have very nice graphics, but I think the old games are more attractive than the new ones.

pketh, I have heard of Gran Turismo 4. This is a famous race game, isn’t it? I haven’t played it yet. My favorite race game is Mario Cart. It’s old, but it is easy for me to play and Mario is my favorite character.

I’m a big fan of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. I find RPG is the most attractive, but it’s addictive because I want to know the next story.

I’ve just found an informative article on early video games. As a kid, I had the home edition of Pong: it came with a console you plugged into a television set and it had controls with orange plastic joysticks.
