Finding Time

I’m very busy now! I’m taking eight university courses in Education, I have to study to pass a test for being a teacher, I have to prepare plans for practice teaching, I teach part-time at a cram school twice a week, and I do volunteer work at a gym where I help an instructor teach P.E. to elementary school children.

But all of these activities are necessary for me, I think. University classes are essential for getting a teacher qualification and for my graduation from university. I can learn many things from teaching English in cram school, for example how to make a class understandable for students, how to treat junior-high school students in puberty, and how to deal with the difference in their English skills. In addition, I have a lot of fun exercising with elementary school children, who are very cute and pure. Also, I can learn many things from the instructor, who was my P.E. teacher in high school, because he has much experience in teaching P.E. and handling students with different and unique characters. So, doing all these things helps me develop, I believe.

But recently I have come to think that I should use my limited time more effectively, which is very difficult, though. Once I have a job, I’ll be busier than now, I guess. One of my fellow seniors who is a teacher says that time is a thing that people need to find. As he says, time is not coming to us of its own accord, even though we are waiting and waiting. I have to find precious time for myself!

Yeah, I also think that I want to get free time and need to find it. I am always busy, too. But now we are students, so we are not busier than working people. We have less responsibility than them. All we have to do is get a lot of experience! Masami, let’s try what we want to do!

Masami, you forgot one thing: the thesis. Now I’m reading King Lear by William Shakespeare to write my thesis and it’s really difficult. When I study for the exam to be a teacher, I feel I should read King Lear, and the opposite thing happens when I read it. I don’t know how much time I should spend in preparing for the exam and in writing the thesis. Thinking about these things makes me upset.

I’m also busy every day, but I think I’m not so busier than you. Because I don’t do volunteer work, don’t have to write thesis yet, and don’t have to take a test for being a teacher this year. But when I became junior, I had to study harder. The substance of English classes became more difficult and profound, so I have a lot of to do every day and I’m tired.

You know, in this practice teaching, I’ll take charge of the 4th-year pupil in elementary school. Also, I’ll teach them Japanese. I’m very nervous about it, but I have to prepare for it sufficiently. So I also want to spend my time effectively.

Yukiko, you are RIGHT! I forgot the graduation thesis. Actually, I don’t work hard on preparing it so far, though…

Miyuki, maybe you are as busy as I now, because you take many classes, and you have to prepare them so hard, I know. When I was a junior, I was so busy too.. Also, I understand your anxiety about practice teaching, for I’ll teach Japanese to elementary school children in October too, as you know. Shall we exchange information about that and help each other?
