Omizutori

Next month, I’m going to visit omizutori, a famous traditional festival in Todaiji.

It is said that spring arrives after the festival. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? I’m very much looking forward to it.

Have you ever seen the festival?

I once narrowly missed the fire ceremony on the temple balcony. Somehow I got sidetracked into something else — dinner, quite possibly — and by the time I arrived at the place it was all over: there was a crowd with cameras and tripods, there were huge burnt-out torches leaning against the wall in the staircase that leads up to the balcony, but no fire.

Also, when I first visited Japan about ten years ago, I almost managed to get myself killed in Nara. It didn’t take me long to find out that I was supposed to ride my bicycle on the sidewalk since the cars were honking at me, but there was this one time when I dashed out into the street from a lane, turning right after looking left and seeing no traffic, and then — whoa! — I almost smashed into an oncoming car. They all drive on the wrong side in this country, y’know.

Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy your trip!
