Les Miserables
By Wakako Kojima :: January 5, 2004
Les Miserables is a novel written by Victor Hugo. I’d heard of the title but never knew the story until a couple of days ago. NHK broadcast the drama from January 1st to 4th, and I liked it very much. I think that French novels are like poetry. The characters’ lines include beautiful metaphors and similies. There are also religious teachings or precepts.
As for the drama, it was really interesting. There was one of my favorite actors: John Malkovich. Some may know him from Being John Malkovich, which is also a good movie, I suppose.

Back in high school I never got around to reading Victor Hugo, and once it was over I stopped reading French books altogether, which is a bit of a shame.
Every time I’ve ever been to London, the musical production of Les Miserables was still being advertised on Shaftesbury Avenue, but I never saw that musical either, which may be a bit of a shame too. A quick Google search reveals that it’s still going, and that there seem to be about 10,800 Web sites selling tickets for the show. One of those sites informs me that it openend in October 1985 and “has indisputably become the world’s most popular musical”.
Topic drift: I saw Lost in Translation in Zürich and really enjoyed it. I wonder if they’ll show it in Japan.
