Determination

I always need much time to make decisions. I seldom make up my mind instantly.

For one thing, I don’t find it easy to select from many things. For example, in a restaurant, I take much time to choose a dish from the menu. Except when I have already decided what I want to have, I usually have a hard time choosing.

I also think about things too carefully. When I was a high school student, I had to choose between science and biology since I could take only one class. I had good grades in science, but my home-room teacher said I had better choose biology. Science was getting more and more difficult and I was a student who was going to take a university-entrance examination, so he said that. I was puzzled about it, but finally I took biology.

I can’t decide things quickly. So, when I’m asked to speak, I’m confused what topic I should talk about. But many students don’t seem to have this problem, which I find admirable.

Yesterday, determination was required again. I found a nice sweater in a shop. I want a sweater like that, but it was expensive. I didn’t buy it after all; however, it also took much time to make this decision.

Yes! You take much time to decide things. I know it well. (笑)But you do not have to mind it. Because it is also your charm point, I think. Where is the shop? how is the sweater? Of course I …

Well, there are many kinds of people. One who decides quickly, another who hesitate when he needs decision. As for me, it is getting easier to decide things. When I was a student, I couldn’t find what I needed and what I had to do. Now, I have come to know what is important and necessary for me and I also find that sometimes I even don’t need to make decisions so qickly. I know I can postpone things.

Miyuki, is your Zodiac Sign Libra? Because Libras are one of the most indecisive signs of the Zodiac. And I wonder now…how did you manage bying the Christmas presents? I`ll bet that was a difficult one, right?

I feel much the same way, a lot of the time. I can be extremely slow to come to a decision but am learning to be quicker, trying to make snap decisions more often. At the end of the day, what’s the worst that can happen? Even if we make a wrong choice we’re sure to learn from our past mistakes. And, you only live once, after all.

Hi Erik.

There’s no shortage of knee-jerk responses and conditioned reflexes anywhere on this planet, so I for one welcome people who take a bit of time over their decisions.

I think there is a big difference between making a careful choice and being paralysed by choice. When I am in a situation where I feel under pressure to make some choice but I am unsure of what to choose, I try to walk away from the situation for a while. The correct choice to make usually comes into my head later.

For example, sometimes I am in a store and I see something I am tempted to buy, but which costs a lot of money. Instead of making a decision to buy that thing immediately I just walk away. Then I come back to the store later. If I still want the thing badly, I buy it. If the thing I want has already been sold, I tell myself that I was not meant to buy that thing, and move on without worrying too much. I find this reduces attitude reduces my stress.

Also: if I have to make a quick decision and the outcome does not matter too much, I just flip a coin. If I disagree with the outcome of the coin flip very much, I make the opposite decision.

I understand you very well, Miyuki-san. It takes me much time to decide if I buy something or not whenever I go shopping. The other day, I did hesitate about whether I buy a coat or not, but I dared to buy it. Now I don’t regret it and I like the coat very much.
