Oden Stall at the Festival

At this year’s university festival, I helped run an oden stall with the other members of my circle. The dish we sold contained eggs, Japanese radish, konnyaku (i.e. paste made from the devil’s tongue), chikuwa (i.e. fish paste cooked in a bamboo-like shape) and so on.

It was warm on the first day, so the oden didn’t sell so well. We had decided to offer it because we thought it would be cold on the weekend of the festival. It turned out that were wrong, however, and we expected the stall would be a failure.

The next day was also warm. We were disappointed, but the oden sold well. Many customers said that the oden was delicious, so we were happy. At around three o’clock it sold out and we were able to enjoy the festival after that.

Preparing the stall took a lot of time, but we had a good time and it was fun to communicate with many people.

I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to eat oden when the weather is warm!!! I have been breaking sacred Japanese tradition all summer! Although now I realize why the conbini stops selling it in the summer. (by the way, the conbini here in Tokyo started selling it again sevearl weeks ago)

I’m glad your circle’s oden sold well. I would have bought some if I was there. -just what circle are you in, if you don’t mind my asking..

Also, was the oden hand made, or did you buy oden packages from the supermarket?

Oden. I want to eat it. Because I live alone, I don’t feel like cooking it. It is fun to eat oden with many people, isn’t it? Now, I have to ask my friends when they will be free at night to eat Oden together.

In my family, it is natural to eat oden for two days continuously. It tastes better if you put more substances into oden, so my mother puts many many substances! We cannot eat all, and we have to eat oden the next day. Personally, I prefer the next day’s oden because the soup soaks into the substances better.

> I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to eat oden when the weather is warm!

Oh well, I was served oden at a Japanese home out in the rice fields when a hundred million frogs were croaking. There are crazy foods like cheese fondue that are simply too heavy on a hot summer day, but I imagine oden is considered a winter food simply because daikon is a winter vegetable and wasn’t available out of season until not so long ago.

The oden at Miyuki-san’s stall was yummy, by the way!

I belong to the drama circle. All the members of this circle have unique personalities. We give performances regularly.

>Also, was the oden hand made, or did you buy oden packages from the supermarket?

We made oden the day before the university festival. It took more than five hours to make 300 servings. Especially, it took about 50 minutes to boil 300 eggs!

I ate oden which your circle made. It was very delicious and thanks to you, I could enjoy myself at the school festival:-D

from your post:
“konnyaku (i.e. paste made from the devil’s tongue”

where’d you find the devil? I know a few people I could refer him to :D

He hangs out here on campus quite a lot.

And from personal acquaintance with the gentleman I can attest to the fact that his tongue is in fact shaped like the konnyaku potato stalk. This explains the barely perceptible hiss when he speaks.

Oden! I like it! I eat oden with “miso”, soybean paste, whenever I eat it at home in Mie. But, once my friend, who is from “kansai”, the western part of Japan”, was surprised at this style of oden because he had never had it with miso. Miyuki-san, you are from Wakayama prefecture, aren’t you? Do you eat it with miso or not?

>Miyuki-san, you are from Wakayama prefecture, aren’t you? Do you eat it with miso or not?

Oh, yes. I’m from Wakayama prefecture, and I have never eaten oden with miso. But my grandfather who lives in Tsu sometimes eats oden with miso. At this festival, one third of the customers ate it with miso.

Your Oden was very delicious! I ate it for the first time and it was so nice. I was glad to see your smile while enjoying the festival. Oden was so nice, but your smile was nicer than it. I enjoy it.

Next year, what store will you open? Please tell me. Of course I will help you. And if my dream comes true, I want to go round the festival with you! Please, please, please!

I ate your cold Oden at second day. It was very delicious! I want to eat hot Oden now. Your Oden became cold because I was busy helping the Chinese noodle shop. I’m sorry. Next year, I’m going to buy a dish of your own cooking.

If you don’t mind, I want to go to an aquarium! I want to look at a lot of fish with you!
